It is very important for the Toastmaster of the Day ( TMotD ) to confirm participants are planning to attend so he/she may adjust the agenda if necessary.
If you are not going to be able to attend the meeting and fulfill your role, PLEASE notify the TMotD of your replacement by noon on the Monday before the meeting. It is your responsibility to find a replacement for your position on the agenda. It is recommended NOT to utilize standard e-mail communications to secure your replacement. Instead, review the three-month rolling schedule and see if you can find a replacement for your position on the agenda. A higher success rate of finding a replacement has been found by picking up the phone and making a few calls to other Toastmasters who would welcome the opportunity and swap for a future role. Once you find your replacement (or are unsuccessful after moderate attempts), please call the TMotD immediately so he/she may make any necessary adjustments to the agenda.
PURPOSE:
To present the membership with the opportunity to learn a new word and use it in their daily conversation.
The word will be a word that will help the membership increase their vocabulary, a word that will be easily
incorporated into everyday conversation, but different from the way they usually express themselves.
PRIOR TO THE MEETING:
Before the meeting, as Word Master, you need to select a "Word of the Day". This word can be coordinated with
the TMotD in order for it to relate to the theme for the meeting; however, this is not mandatory. Prepare a
sentence as an example of how to use the word.
Prepare a brief but thorough summary of your role as Word Master which explains your role in the program to visiting guests.
AS YOU ARRIVE AT THE MEETING:
In letters large enough to be seen from the back of the room, print the word, the part of speech and a brief
definition. The word can placed on an easel stand off to the side of the room, taped to a side wall, etc. in
order for members to be able to see the word throughout the meeting. Do not display the word in a position where
the audience would find it distracting to any other portion of the meeting (eg: taped to the lectern).
DURING THE MEETING:
When called upon you by the TMotD, stand at your seat and briefly state the purpose of the "Word of the Day"
for those guests present and then give word for the day with its additional information. Keep a list and count
the members who use the word of the day or a variation of the word, and how many times they were able to include
it into their speaking role during the meeting. This includes speakers, evaluators, table topics speakers, etc.
Be prepared to present your report near the end of the meeting at my request.
AFTER THE MEETING:
Give your prepared word of the day, it's explanation, and report of members who were able to integrate the word
into their spoken part on the program to the Secretary to be placed with the meeting minutes.
