Speechcraft Communication Workshop

Speechcraft is a nine-session workshop to help you build your communication skills: speaking, listening, and thinking. Instead of a sterile classroom environment, Speechcraft offers a friendly, comfortable learning laboratory in which experienced Toastmasters members and workshop participants help each other to learn.

Who should participate in Speechcraft?

town crier Anyone who wants to communicate more effectively at work, at home, or in civic activities is a perfect candidate. Speechcraft will help you learn how to give presentations, and it will also help you hone your ability to listen wholeheartedly, to give and receive feedback, to speak off the cuff, and other abilities involved in truly effective communication.

What will I learn in Speechcraft?

woman Topics included in the Speechcraft workshop will be adjusted to meet the needs of the participants, but always included will be:
- basics: organization, overcoming nervousness
- effective body language and voice
- impromptu speaking
- providing effective feedback
- adapting to a specific audience

Okay, but how will I learn?

Raising hand In Speechcraft you learn by doing. There will be educational presentations to teach you the basics, but the real learning will happen as you work with your personal coach to prepare for three speaking assignments. You will also learn about and practice impromptu speaking, introducing a speaker, and giving feedback to another speaker effectively.
Check out what some of our graduates have to say about their Speechcraft experience!

How much will it cost me?

Oh, my! Not much! The Speechcraft fee of $50 covers all educational sessions, personal coaching with an experienced Toastmaster, and your Speechcraft notebook, and even covers part of your membership fees should you decide to continue in Toastmasters beyond the Speechcraft. In fact, with your supervisor's permission, the Speechcraft fee is reimbursible for Eastman employees through an expense statement.

I want to participate in a Speechcraft. How do I sign up?

sledding Just contact Wendy Lick, ph 423-229-5504, to find out when the next Speechcraft is scheduled by a Kingsport Toastmasters Club. If you are at a site other than Kingsport, go to www.toastmasters.org to find a Toastmasters Club in your area or to learn more about Toastmasters, the world's largest non-profit organization dedicated to helping its members improve their communication and leadership skills.

I want my whole team to improve their communication skills. Can you help me with that?

sledding We can offer a Speechcraft workshop just for your team, tailored to meet your particular needs. Wendy can help you with that too!

Also please consider joining a Toastmasters Club and participating in the High Performance Leadership Program. This hands-on, skill-building program requires you to conduct a leadership project of your choice, with advice from a guidance committee of people whose leadership skills you respect.

I can't commit to Speechcraft right now. Isn't there another way?

Frustrated man Of course! Speechcraft is sort of an accelerated version of the regular Toastmasters program of improving communication and leadership skills. If you don't want to wait for the next scheduled Speechcraft workshop, or if you would prefer to work at your own pace instead of committing to a nine-session workshop, just join a Toastmasters Club. There are three that meet at Eastman's Kingsport site, and others that meet elsewhere in the Tri-Cities and throughout the world.

See you at the lectern!
